  16. ------------
  17. Almanac is not free software.  It is released as
  18. shareware, which provides the opportunity for the
  19. program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  20.  
  21. We hope that after you try Almanac you will like
  22. it so much that you will want to register.  By
  23. doing so you are voting with your pocketbook for
  24. us to continue developing high-quality, Windows
  25. shareware.

  28. is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.

  31. LEGAL MATTERS
  32. -------------
  33. We are not responsible for anything at all.  Nothing.
  34. Even if we are held responsible, the limit of our
  35. liability is the licensing fees you paid.  The full text
  36. of our license agreement is found near the bottom of
  37. this file.

  40. COMPATIBILITY
  41. -------------
  42. If you are running a version of Almanac earlier than
  43. 3.0, please be advised that the format of the desktop
  44. data files has been changed.  Notes and appointments
  45. entered in Almanac 1.0 through 1.04 (*.ALD files)
  46. will require translation to the new data base format.
  47. Refer to the XLATEALD.TXT file for instructions on
  48. how to convert these data files using XLATEALD.EXE.
  49.  
  50. Overlays created with earlier versions of Almanac
  51. (*.ALO files) are 100% compatible with Almanac 3.0.
  52. The wedding anniversary gifts are now optional.
  53. You may edit any wedding anniversary definitions
  54. created with pre-3.0 versions and and check the
  55. Wedding check box to display this information.

  59. UPDATING A PREVIOUS ALMANAC INSTALLATION
  60. ----------------------------------------
  61. If you are updating a 3.0 Almanac installation, you may
  62. want to de-select one or more of the installation
  63. options.  The following table explains what files will
  64. be copied to your hard disk for each option:
  65.  
  66.     Program Files:  Copies the executable program file
  67.                     and supporting modules.  This option
  68.                     should be selected when installing
  69.                     or upgrading your Almanac program.
  70.  
  71.  Default Calendar:  Copies the DEFAULT.ALC calendar file
  72.                     used by Almanac on start-up.  Also
  73.                     copies the ALMLOCN.DAT file that
  74.                     contains location and time zone
  75.                     information for various cities.
  76.  
  77.   Sample Overlays:  Copies the sample overlays files
  78.                     included with the Almanac release.
  79.  
  80. Online Help Files:  Copies online help files that can be
  81.                     accessed from Almanac's Help menu.

  85. INSTALLING ALMANAC 3.0
  86. ----------------------
  87. The Almanac package includes a graphical Windows
  88. installation program using the standard name of SETUP.EXE.
  89. You should place all of the files included in the release
  90. package on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of
  91. your hard drive.
  92.  
  93. SETUP requires about 600K bytes to complete the
  94. installation of Almanac.  Once installed, the Almanac
  95. files will occupy approximately 400K.
  96.  
  97. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  98. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager.
  99.  
  100. Enter "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  101. drive/directory that you are installing Almanac FROM
  102. (for example, A:\SETUP).
  103.  
  104. 1. The first action performed by SETUP is to display the
  105.    date your computer is set to.  Almanac's calendar
  106.    will not operate correctly if your computer is not set
  107.    to the correct date.
  108.  
  109. 2. SETUP will prompt for the target directory you would like
  110.    to install Almanac to on your hard disk.  Accept the
  111.    default or enter a directory of your choice.
  112.  
  113. 3. SETUP will then display a dialog of the components that
  114.    can be installed.  You should leave all of the boxes
  115.    checked if this is a first time installation.
  116.  
  117. 4. If you are using Program Manager as your Windows shell,
  118.    SETUP will allow a Program Manager group to be selected
  119.    to receive the startup icon for Almanac.
  120.  
  121. SETUP will inform you when installation is complete, and
  122. direct you to the WHATSNEW.TXT and REGISTER.TXT files.
  123.  
  124. IF SETUP REPORTS PROBLEMS UPDATING COMMDLG:
  125.  
  126.   1) Exit Windows and restart Windows to insure a clean
  127.      system.
  128.  
  129.   2) Hold down the SHIFT key while Windows is initial-
  130.      izing.  This will prevent Windows from launching
  131.      any other applications after Program Manager.
  132.  
  133.   3) Do NOT use the Browse function to start SETUP.
  134.      Doing so will invoke the COMMDLG module and
  135.      prevent SETUP from completing the installation.

  146.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  147.  
  148.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Almanac
  149.  on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining 
  150.  whether Almanac is suitable for their needs.  The use 
  151.  of Almanac, except for the initial 30-day trial, 
  152.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Almanac,
  153.  outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person, 
  154.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is 
  155.  strictly prohibited. 
  156.  
  157.  A single user license permits a user to use Almanac
  158.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  159.  program on different computers, but may not use the program
  160.  on more than one computer at the same time.
  161.  
  162.  No one may modify or patch the Almanac executable files 
  163.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling, 
  164.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program. 
  165.  
  166.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Almanac 
  167.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above 
  168.  limitations, and also the following: 
  169.  
  170.   1)    Almanac and all of its release files must be copied
  171.         in unmodified form, complete with the file containing
  172.         this license information.
  173.  
  174.   2)    Almanac may not be distributed in conjunction with
  175.         any other product without a specific license to do so
  176.         from Impact Software.
  177.  
  178.   3)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  179.         accepted, except as authorized below:
  180.  
  181.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  182.            may make Almanac available for downloading only as
  183.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  184.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  185.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  186.            charge for the download of Almanac.
  187.  
  188.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  189.            the ASP may distribute Almanac, subject to the
  190.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  191.            approved vendors may distribute Almanac only after
  192.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  193.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  194.            details (enclose your catalog).
  195.  
  196.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the 
  197.            Almanac diskette to their members, subject to 
  198.            the above conditions, without specific permission.  
  199.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee 
  200.            not to exceed five dollars. 
  201.  
  202.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  203.  
  204.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  205.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  206.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  207.   purchase.
  208.  
  209.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  210.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  211.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  212.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  213.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  214.   exceed the purchase price of the product.
  215.  
  216.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  217.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  218.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  219.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  220.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  221.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  222.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  223.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  224.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER
  225.   (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
  226.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS
  227.   INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE
  228.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  229.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  231.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  232.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  233.   contents.

  235.   U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS

  237.   Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
  238.   to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of
